As domestic and international airlines continue to feel the ‘squeeze’ of sky-rocketing fuel prices, they continue to pass increased costs on to consumers. Most of us can make it through a 2-hour flight without paying two bucks for a bottle of water. Few of us, however, have the luxury of traveling with only luggage that is considered “carry-on”. If you must check any luggage, most domestic carriers now charge a fee.

Airfarewatchdog put together a handy chart showing how much airlines are charging to check your bag. Most U.S. airlines want you to fork over $15 for your first bag and $25 for the second. If you’re one of those people doesn’t know the meaning of the phrase “travel light,” you’re going to pay through the nose if you’ve got more than two bags or a suitcase that weighs more than 50 pounds.”

Call it the flier’s revenge: With airlines starting to charge for checking even one piece of luggage, more travelers are just shipping the suitcases on their own.

What started as a premium service to help avoid the headaches of checking items is now looking more attractive to fliers, who feel that if they must pay to transport luggage, it might as well be on their own terms, according to companies that specialize in shipping luggage. The companies’ fees are much pricier than airline surcharges, but they do promise the convenience of door-to-door service.
