Mary Dorice Wills for ConventionTrip.com

“As domestic and international airlines continue to feel the ‘squeeze’ of sky-rocketing fuel prices, they continue to pass increased costs on to consumers. Most of us can make it through a 2-hour flight without paying two bucks for a bottle of water. Few of us, however, have the luxury of traveling with only luggage that is considered “carry-on”. If you must check any luggage, most domestic carriers now charge a fee.

So far, Alaska, Continental and Delta are allowing travelers to check their first bag free of charge (Southwest still allows two checked bags for free). American, U.S. Airways, Northwest and United are charging $15 for the first bag you check. The second bag checked will cost you $25 on most domestic carriers. And, the prices just go up from there for each additional bag you check. If you are a business traveler and must carry displays, heavy A/V equipment, be forewarned: the over-limit (weight and size) fees can be astronomical. Some carriers charge as much as $250 for shipping one over-sized piece.

So, what’s a traveler to do? Whenever possible, travel light; very light. For those for whom traveling light is not an option we began to wonder if there were cheaper ways to ship your luggage than via the airlines. What we found was very interesting; there is no shortage of firms and services that will happily ship your luggage – for a fee – sometimes a hefty fee. ”

<follow the link above for article in its entirety>

Luggage Ahead’s foundation was built on decades of experience in the transportation industry. We ship much more than just luggage. Trade show materials, displays, golfbags, random boxing, and quite literally anything else can be shipped for you. Let us make your travels easier, while puting money back in your pocket.

Luggage Ahead recently sponsored S.T.A.R.T. II’s “Give Me Shelter” fundraiser in Garfield, NJ. The event took place on Thursday, April 30th, 2009. Save The Animals Rescue Team II (S.T.A.R.T.II) of Bergen and Passaic Counties in New Jersey found homes for nearly 1,000 cats and dogs in 2008. The privately funded shelter also has other programs such as spay and neutering, fostering, transporting, and fundraising.

Luggage Ahead believes strongly in animal rights and the betterment of animals. The company who makes the lives of travelers easier, is trying to do the same for homeless animals. “We are happy to help out such a great cause in any way we can. Between my two partners and I, we have over half a dozen pets. Helping animals without loving homes is very important to us.”, says LuggageAhead’s managing partner Seth Caruso. For more information on S.T.A.R.T.II, visit www.start2pets.petfinder.org

“With airlines charging ever higher fees for the right to lose your luggage, you might find it cheaper -- if not safer -- to ship your bag than check it.
Airfarewatchdog put together a handy chart showing how much airlines are charging to check your bag. Most U.S. airlines want you to fork over $15 for your first bag and $25 for the second. If you're one of those people doesn't know the meaning of the phrase "travel light," you're going to pay through the nose if you've got more than two bags or a suitcase that weighs more than 50 pounds.”
